Written by Wilson HackA solid homage to El Rey Court, this East Austin bathroom is colorful but quiet, playful but calm.
Suzanna took the bathroom down to the studs to create a blank canvas from which to begin. A rug from CB2 (an oversized runner that was cut down to size) kick-started the careful color story. Yellow hexagonal porcelain tile by Clay Imports was used throughout, matching candidly with the custom vanity painted in Stiffkey Blue by Farrow & Ball. The walls are bathed in plaster, seamlessly transitioning into the shower where waterproof Tadelakt was painstakingly applied. The level of detail continues to the wall shelving which is also plastered, unifying the lightness in order to embolden the color.
An existing small and strangely angled guest bathroom was straightened out in order to allow for more room. A deep soaking tub and shower, custom vanity and medicine cabinet were added to better serve the space. Suzanna wrapped the medicine cabinet in white oak, the same wood from the custom vanity in order to punctuate the white floor-to-ceiling subway tile with a pop of color. The fun floor tile extinguishes any chance of this being a mundane bathroom, injecting a playful spirit perfect for the children it was designed for.
